Five Evenings Theater presents a new production of Andrew Ivanov’s It’s All Her Fault, a dark, painfully contemporary play about loneliness, grief, and the desperate need to be heard by the people closest to us.

A mother and her teenage son live under the same roof, yet they have almost completely lost the ability to speak to one another. Their conversations have become arguments, accusations, slammed doors, and silence. Each is grieving. Each is lonely. Each desperately needs the other — and neither knows how to cross the distance between them.

Unable to reach her son in real life, the mother creates a fictional identity online: a teenage girl who begins chatting with him through social media. What starts as an awkward attempt to understand her child becomes something far more complicated. Behind the safety of invented names and virtual identities, mother and son finally begin to communicate. He tells this stranger what he cannot tell his mother. She hears from her son what he could never say to her face.

For a moment, the virtual world gives them what real life could not: intimacy, trust, tenderness, even love. But the closer they become, the more dangerous the deception becomes.

It’s All Her Fault asks a disturbing and deeply human question: what happens when the only way to reach someone you love is to become someone else?
